Stakes are special races with enhanced prize money, designed to attract the best of the best in racing. Southland Casino Racing is home to one of the oldest stakes events in the country, the Southland Derby.
64 greyhounds are selected for this event, but unlike most stakes races, the only way to advance in this event is to finish ahead of the greyhound you are bracketed against. Finishing second could eliminate you, and finishing fifth could allow you to advance. Anything can happen in this event.
Our younger greyhounds (under 2 years old) take the center stage in this stakes event. In the past, the Spring Futurity launched the first stakes victory for many of our current and past greyhound superstars.
The Razorback Classic has been the proving grounds for the top 3/8ths of a mile distance racers not only at Southland, but in the country. At 660-yards, the race gives nearly equal chances to early speed and closing speed greyhounds, making the finishes of this race some of the closest there is!
Rich in history and one of the longest continually running stakes events in the country, the Southland Derby is well known in the industry. This stakes event hosts the best sprinters in the country and the winner of this event is often in consideration for All-American honors (the highest individual honor for a racing greyhound in the United States).
The “Festival of Stakes” is the richest greyhound stakes race in the entire country. Nine different stakes races are run at the same time during this event, producing nine eventual champions. This event is so special that it will be the only performance run when the championships take place on Saturday, October 2nd.
Held nearly a week after the championships of the Festival of Stakes, this special single race pits the top four finishers in the male and female divisions of the Darby Henry Sprint Championships face off in a single race!
